Social Media Tools

Google Documents - This tool could be used for vocabulary or written responses. I am interested in this tool as a step toward a paperless process of turning in assignments. Concerns could be whether or not the student is actually doing the work. A local concern would be creating accounts since we do not have e-mail accounts for students and the fact that we do not have computers for all students. This tool could be used next year since the school is planning to allow students to bring their own devices. I still need to figure out how the teacher offers feedback and to ensure the student is doing the work.

You Tube - "A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words"- Increase engagement in the classroom by using video images, clips, interviews etc. There could be some concern regarding appropriate content. At New London High School, we just got access to You Tube, but it is on teacher computers only. To show a clip to the class, I have to project it with the Mimio and the picture quality is lacking. I am pleased with some of the video clips that I have found.

Linked In - Connect with other educators. Collaborate, network, and share ideas. The goal seems to be a more professional connection rather than other social media sites that might be for more personal or entertaining purposes. A concern might be privacy but the ability to connect with others in the same field would be valuable.
